Metabolomics is defined as the identification and quantification of metabolic products in a biological system. In the past, the use of this technology has aided the identification of metabolites associated with complex diseases and monogenic disorders, such as inborn errors of metabolism. Metabolomics refers to metabolite profiling or the differential study of the metabolome between experimental and control groups after an external stimulus is applied, for example biochemical stress or drug treatment. These Editor's picks cover a variety of hot topics in metabolomics research, ranging from challenges in clinical metabolomics to emerging new strategies for successful metabolite identification.
